Violence and support: a resource guide for men
Recognizing a situation of violence and seeking help takes courage. Whether you are a victim of violence or you are having difficulty managing your own anger or behaviors, it's important to know that you are not alone and that resources exist.
This page aims to clearly and directly present the professional and confidential resources that are here to listen and support you.
In case of immediate danger to yourself or someone else, never hesitate to call 911.
If you are a man experiencing violence
Violence can take many forms (physical, psychological, sexual) and can affect anyone, regardless of gender.
Sexual violence and assault
If you have experienced a sexual assault, it is important to seek medical and psychosocial support.
- Immediate medical steps: Consider going to the emergency room to receive preventive care (PEP for HIV, emergency contraception, STI screening).
- Support resources:
- Info-aide violence sexuelle: The provincial helpline, available 24/7 for listening and immediate support. (1-888-933-9007 | Website)
- CALACS (Centres d'aide et de lutte contre les agressions à caractère sexuel): The network of regional sexual assault centres in Quebec offers inclusive support. (Find the CALACS in your region here.) (FR only)
Intimate partner violence
Men can also be victims of violence in a relationship.
- Support resources:
- SOS violence conjugale: The provincial hotline, available 24/7, for listening and help. (1-800-363-9010 | Website)
- Men's help resources: Organizations exist to offer support specifically for men (e.g., Service d'aide aux hommes de Montréal).
If you have difficulty managing your anger or behaviors
Recognizing that one has violent behaviors or anger that is difficult to control is the first, and most important, step towards change. Seeking help is a sign of strength and responsibility.
Specialized organizations exist to help you develop management strategies and healthier relationships, in a non-judgmental approach.
- Support resources:
- Service d'aide aux conjoints (SAC): The provincial reference network for men who wish to take steps to end their violent behaviors. (FR only)
- À cœur d'homme: Another Quebec network that offers support and therapy for men. (FR only)
